Clear From Within: Healing Hormonal Acne at the Root (Mind, Body & Hormones)

You’ve likely already gone down the route of clean skincare, supplements and drastically changing your diet, when dealing with hormonal acne. You’ve probably also spent many sleepless nights trawling the internet for a solution.

It’s not uncommon for people to feel disconnected from their bodies when their skin isn’t cooperating, like it’s a personal betrayal. This post invites you to look at hormonal acne in a different light, a communication that is often misunderstood.

At Creative Dab, I believe clear skin comes from understanding our body’s patterns, which is more than just physical, it’s hormonal, emotional, and also about your energy, so let’s take a look at what could be causing your hormonal acne and heal it holistically, and find the next best move for you.

My Story: When “Doing Everything Right” Still Didn’t Work

I assumed it was a matter of following a strict diet, buying expensive skincare and supplements and even went by the recommendations of celebrities and health experts, when I was trying to achieve clear skin.

However, my hormonal acne, mainly concentrated on my chin and jawline, continued to be a problem.

It was not until I made a major breakthrough, that wasn’t thanks to a single miracle product or regimen, but to the realisation that it was not my skin that was the problem, it was my body.

High levels of stress, fluctuations in blood sugar, stomach issues, and an always-on nervous system were the unseen forces driving my acne.

When I ceased to ask myself “What should I eliminate” and started inquiring “What does my body need help with” my outlook on life and skin care completely turned around, and that is the starting point of Clear From Within.

What Causes Hormonal Acne? (The Root-Cause Perspective)

Leading to increased oil production and inflammation, but that’s just half the story, when we look at hormonal acne we’re often told it’s a result of too much testosterone and androgens.

Well-known, hormones are messengers that adjust to the body’s internal conditions, if we want to effectively combat hormonal acne, we must delve into the systems that affect these hormones, and understand them.

Common hormonal acne root causes include:

When discussing acne, two people can have the same skin issue, but due to various physiological factors, they may need a totally different way to combat it.

Chronic stress and high cortisol levels can be causing problems in one person, perhaps leading to blood sugar imbalance and insulin spikes and in another, to poor gut health and inflammation. Impaired liver detoxification is a condition that affects another individual. Some may be plagued with nutrient deficiencies and others could be suffering from a dysregulated nervous system.

The Science + Soul of Holistic Acne Healing

Speaking of holistic acne healing I’m not throwing out science, I’m building on it. Coming from a place that takes into account how our bodies work, and real life experiences, and symptoms and patterns. Those are the things that drive my approach to naturally supporting hormonal acne.

The four core principles I focus on are.

1. Stress, Cortisol & the Nervous System

And this wreaks havoc on our body’s blood sugar regulation, causes inflammation and messes with our hormonal balance, when we’re under chronic stress our cortisol levels rise.

Coming from a holistic standpoint, a stressed nervous system throws the body into survival mode, basically saying that healing is not the priority anymore.

Well-known as a reflection of our emotional state, our skin often mirrors a life that’s feeling like constant pressure.

Well-known remedies for stress, such as consistent sleep, gentle movement, breathing techniques and calming activities are not something we can skip.

They are the building blocks of our nervous system’s health.

2. Blood Sugar Balance & Hormones

As for acne, blood sugar plays a significant role in hormonal acne, and when it spikes, insulin kicks in. Elevated insulin is a known trigger for androgen production, and androgens are responsible for causing acne, as they increase the production of oil by the glands in the skin.

You don’t have to cut back on carbs entirely, basically, understanding the concept of building your meals so they stabilise your body is what you need to do. This involves combining protein, fibre, healthy fats and regular meals to help control your blood sugar levels, and thus calm your hormones, and in turn get clearer skin.

3. Gut Health & Inflammation

In terms of our body’s health, the gut plays a massive role in communicating with our immune system and our hormones.

Coming racing from a poor diet, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food intolerances and repeated use of antibiotics can all add to a state of chronic inflammation, and one of the biggest drivers of acne.

Well-known holistic approaches to healing acne have actually shown that improving digestion is the starting point, rather than restricting food intake.

4. Liver Support & Hormone Detoxification

With respect to hormone regulation, the liver plays a crucial role, and if its pathways are sluggish, hormones can be reabsorbed back into the body, even manifesting as skin issues.

While detoxification can be approached with the idea of extreme cleanses, this is not a necessary way to support liver function and hormone detoxification. What is required is daily and more moderate strategies. We know that hydration, consumption of bitter foods, fiber and consistent bowel movements are highly effective.
